Off Campus

Off-campus access

All of the Health Sciences Library's electronic resources are available to WCM-Q users from any location - journals, books, databases and more! Whether you are studying or conducting research from home, at the clinic, or anywhere with an Internet connection, the following steps will allow you to access all of these electronic resources: 

  • Go to the Health Sciences Library website 
  • Find the resource you want to access 
  • Click on the link 
  • At this point, you will be prompted to login for off-campus access (unless it is a freely available resource which anyone can access) 
  • Enter your WCM-Q email address and password

For Guests

Guest and visitor services (non-WCM-Q)

Assistance is available when you visit the Health Sciences Library, Our staff members provide basic reference service for your questions and instruction in the use of the facilities. For more in-depth reference or research help, please ask to speak to a librarian. All information about your use of the Reading Room resources is confidential.

Online resources

You have access to many of our licensed web resources in the Reading Room. Please ask the Reading Room staff to log you onto the computers.

We have electronic textbooks and journals, article databases, and many recommendations for relevant and reliable web resources. These are searchable in a variety of ways that our staff can demonstrate to you on request.

Computer use is on a first-come, first-serve basis, although we do ask that you give priority to WCM-Q faculty and students.

Medical reference books and textbooks

Please be aware that our collection is best suited to medical researchers, practitioners and other healthcare professionals. Reference librarians will assist members of the public in accessing references that best suit their needs.

Materials are shelved in open stacks that are accessible to you while you are in the Reading Room. We regret that materials may not be signed out by guests.

About our technology

Macintosh computers, a photocopier, a printer and a scanner are available.

Cell phones should be switched to silent and calls taken outside the room.

We also provide Library Guides to publicly accessible information that may be of interest to our wider research and medical community.

Student Support

Collections

Students have access to thousands of books, databases, and online resources through the Health Sciences Library.

Consultations

We also provide 1:1 consultations to assist with research, understand how to find information, appraise the quality of sources, use evidence to apply to practice, and become information fluent.

Course support

Our course support guides have the tools you need to be successful throughout your student journey.

Spaces

We also welcome you to use the library Reading Room located in the North Hall A001, where we have comfortable group study space and a bright and inviting atmosphere surrounded by books on all the key medical subject areas.

In the student lounge, we provide a book dispenser with selected popular titles to check out and return easily 24/7. Come to the library for your library card barcode to get started borrowing.

Study pods are a new addition to allow for quiet individual study, group sessions, or even some practice on the piano. Make a booking online and come to the Reading Room to collect the key.

Faculty collaboration

Faculty collaborations are key to the Health Sciences Library's role. We work with faculty to:

  • provide evidence-based practice curriculum
  • enhance teaching through access to high-quality resources
  • develop competencies based on relevant standards such as the AAMC EPAs, LCME, and ACRL
  • advise on scholarly communications
    • journal selection
    • predatory publishing
    • manuscript editing
    • copyright and author's rights
    • research output metrics
    • visual design in publications
