About

The official One Health definition developed by the United Nations One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP) states:

"One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems.

It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent.

The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate change, and contributing to sustainable development."

How to Use the One Health Guide

Because of the transdisciplinary nature of the One Health concept, research into this topic may span the sciences, including: biology, ecology, epidemiology, environmental science, public health, veterinary medicine, virology, zoology, and many other disciplines. This guide is intended to provide a starting point for research into this topic, but is not exhaustive.

The guide is primarily organized into the general One Health sectors. The Overview page includes books, journals, and other resources that apply to the One Health paradigm as a whole. Each of the three main sectors of One Health has a dedicated page where you will find pertinent databases and other resources relating to that focus area: Animal Health, Environmental Health, and Human Health. Tools to keep abreast of developments on this topic can be found on the Current Awareness page. Lastly, the Get Involved page contains links to educational and engagement opportunities related to One Health.

International Agencies and Organizations

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO): One Health
The FAO One Health website provides resources, publications, news, and background information on One Health strategies and projects.
International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID)
Applying a One Health approach, the mission of ISID is to "support health professionals, non-government organizations, and governments around the world in their work to prevent, investigate, and manage infectious disease outbreaks when they occur" (ISID, 2022).
One Health Commission
The One Health Commission is a nonprofit organization that promotes One Health principles, educates the public, and coordinates One Health activities on an international level. The site contains an extensive library of One Health materials, including reports, guidelines, presentations, brochures, journal articles, books, and webinars.
One Health Initiative
From their website; "The One Health Initiative is a movement to forge co-equal, all inclusive collaborations between physicians, osteopathic physicians, veterinarians, dentists, nurses, and other scientific-health and environmentally related disciplines". This site contains news, publications, and event opportunities related to One Health.
World Health Organization (WHO): One Health
WHO's One Health Initiative team coordinates One Health activities and the quadripartite collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Visit this site for news, publications, and information on WHO One Health projects and initiatives.
World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH): One Health
WOAH (formerly OIE) is an intergovernmental organization that aims to improve animal health globally. WOAH One Health communication tools, such as factsheets and infographics, are freely accessible and available.

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention: One Health Programme
The One Health Programme at Africa CDC supports the implementation of One Health activities across the member states of the African Union.
American Veterinary Medical Association: One Health
This site provides resources that focus on veterinarians' role in the One Health movement.
One Health Aotearoa
An organization that coordinates One Health initiatives for the country of New Zealand.
One Health European Joint Programme (OHEJP)
The One Health European Joint Programme (OHEJP) is a consortium of EU medical, veterinary & food institutes with a focus on collaboration on One Health activities and projects.
One Health Network South Asia
The One Health Network-South Asia forms a collaborative foundation between public health, domestic animal health, and wildlife health professionals to better manage infectious diseases in the South Asia region. Participating nations include: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): One Health
This website provides general information about the One Health concept and focus areas, a resource library of graphics and factsheets, and details about the CDC's efforts to lead One Health activities in the United States and abroad.
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA): One Health
The USDA One Health webpage contains news, resources, and information on a number of key One Health issues, such as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and zoonotic threats affecting food-producing animals.
Wildlife Health Australia
Wildlife Health Australia (WHA) is the coordinating body for wildlife health in Australia. Current wildlife health information is provided via factsheets, reports, guidelines, and other resources.
