AI Literacy in Academic Libraries: Preparing Healthcare Students to address Online Health Misinformation/Disinformation

In the current digital landscape, healthcare students face the challenge of navigating an overwhelming volume of online health information, much of which is often misleading or inaccurate. Academic libraries can help by teaching essential skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy, a key competency in fostering health media literacy among future healthcare professionals. AI literacy equips healthcare students with essential understanding of the machine learning, generative AI and automated fact-checking systems. These skills enable students to critically evaluate digital content and communicate more effectively with patients in their future healthcare roles.

This presentation will explore how academic librarians can integrate AI literacy into their instruction programs, offering strategies and real-world examples. By teaching students to effectively utilize AI technologies, libraries can play a crucial role in combating health misinformation and promoting evidence-based healthcare practices. The session concludes with a sample lesson plan for integrating AI literacy into library instruction.
